Dating back to the ancient Greeks, asbestos has been used in a wide range of products. Many you have heard about due to the reclamation process that started in the mid-1980s for the insulation found in homes, schools and commercial buildings.

If you are at all familiar with motor vehicles, you’ll also know that asbestos has been used in brake shoes due to its heat-resistant and fire-retardant components.

You may be surprised, however, to find that this cancer-causing product can also be found in the following areas:

• Cement siding and wallboard
• Textured paints and coatings
• Adhesives
• Chalkboards
• Elevator brake shoes
• Caulking and putties
• Heating and electrical ducts
• Artificial snow
• Table pads

Even in your own home, asbestos may be found in gas-fired fireplaces using artificial ashes and embers. The walls and floors around wood burning stoves may also be protected with asbestos paper, millboard or cement sheets.

While asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral, its products create many small fibers that, when breathed into the lungs for extended periods of time, can cause serious health problems including cancer and death. The most dangerous health problem is Mesothelioma, a cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs.

In 1979, approximately 560,000 metric tons of asbestos was used in domestic products. Today, that number has been reduced today to less than 55,000 metric tons. Asbestos use in new products was banned by the EPA, but many products still exist that were produced before asbestos use was restricted.

You and your family may be at risk of asbestos cancer.  Contact an attorney as soon as possible for more information.
