I've been looking at two-unit house to purchase in New York. I realized that two of the pipes in the basement are covered with an asbestos insulation. After asking the realtor about it, he said the current owner installed the two furnaces himself and "didn't know" how the asbestos covering was removed from the pipes at that time. Should I even bother with this place? There is probably asbestos all over the ground not to mention what I can clearly see on the pipes still. Or should I play hardball on the issue to get the place and have it corrected?
