Assuming you understand the dangers asbestos poses - and assuming you don't have any of the equipment professional, certified asbestos removers are required to wear and use - would you risk removing it on your own anyway?
If you need a more detailed scenario - pipes in basement of a 140+ year old home in the north east United States were wrapped in asbestos, probably in 1946 or later - but no later than 1971. The wrappings appear 95-98% intact - but there is some damage where it's torn and appears crumbling.
